Tips for Handling Early Weaned Pigs

Weaning pigs early in the face of PEDV requires TLC. When pork producers experience an outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in a herd, a common strategy used to stop the disease from spreading is to quickly wean all piglets who have not yet contracted the disease and move them out of the facility. Consequently, some piglets are moving to the nursery as young as 7 days of age. Weaning younger, more vulnerable piglets means extra attention to detail and some tender loving care (TLC) is needed to get pigs off to a good start. read more

Lameness in Growing Pigs Is a Continuous Challenge

Our focus those days was primarily nursery and grow-finish health, and we were able to visit a variety of sites. During the drive home on Friday afternoon, we attempted to wrap up our week, discussing all of the things wed seen. When the student commented, I think we talked about lameness, arthritis or stiff pigs within every barn we were in this week, the conversation quickly evolved, and we spent a majority of our trip on this very challenging subject. read more

US Breeding Pigs to Require Identifier Tag in January
