North Korea kicked off the internet by giant DDoS: Was it the USA, or someone else?
2014-12-23 14:28:57| Extremetech
Yesterday evening, North Korea was unceremoniously knocked off the internet by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. This comes shortly after the US government promised a 'proportional response' to the Sony Pictures hack, which the FBI believes was carried out by North Korea. While it would be rather funny if the US government was responsible for taking North Korea off the internet, it's more likely to be the actions of some disgruntled hacktivists such as Anonymous or Lizard Squad.
Sony fights back against hackers, stolen file sharers by firing a DDoS back at them

When the hackee becomes the hacker... In a somewhat amusing twist to the ongoing Sony Pictures hack and massive breach of sensitive files and unreleased films, the company is now fighting back. According to two unnamed sources, Sony is now using 'hundreds of computers' to perform a DDoS on websites where you can download the leaked data. Better yet, Sony is apparently using Amazon's cloud servers (AWS) to perform the DDoS. While I'm all for proactive security measures, Sony might be taking it a little bit too far here.
Sonys PlayStation Network taken down by DDoS, as company reels from last months massive Sony Pictures hack
2014-12-08 14:36:47| Extremetech
Poor Sony: This morning, the company's PlayStation Network was unreachable due to suspected foul play by Lizard Squad, the same hacker group that took down Microsoft's Xbox Live network last wee. Lizard Squad used a distributed denial of service (DDoS) to take the networks offline. This latest Sony outage comes just a couple of weeks after a devastating and very-high-profile hack on Sony Pictures, which resulted in a massive leak of sensitive information and unreleased movies.
