IEA: Renewables could power prosperity in Africa
2014-10-13 12:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
BusinessGreen: Renewables can meet sub-Saharan Africa's energy needs by 2040 if the region can unlock its potential, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said. The influential agency predicts energy demand will grow by around 80 per cent across the region as the economy quadruples in size over the next 25 years. But in a special report on the continent, the IEA says its renewable energy resources are more than sufficient to cope with the rising demand. It highlights widespread solar and hydropower potential,...

Efficiency Worth More Than Renewables at $310 Billion, IEA Says
2014-10-09 10:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: Investments in measures to curb energy waste and boost efficiency are overtaking wind and solar spending and have reached at least $310 billion a year, the International Energy Agency said. Thats almost $100 billion higher than investment in renewable energy in 2013, which amounted to $213 billion, according to estimates from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Demand dropped as much as 5 percent from 2001 to 2011, largely due to investments in efficiency, the Paris-based agency said today in a...

Energy plan calls for big renewables projects in California deserts
2014-09-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
San Francisco Chronicle: Industrial-scale solar, wind and geothermal projects could be built within a few miles of national parks in the California desert as part of the Obama and Brown administrations' efforts to combat climate change, under a mammoth plan released by federal and state officials Tuesday. Construction of the plants, many of which could cover several square miles, would drastically alter desert vistas near national parks and wilderness areas, according to a draft of the Renewable Energy Conservation Plan,...

Study: Natural Gas Reliance Impediment to Renewables
2014-09-24 22:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate Central: Using natural gas to produce electricity is a major part of the Obama administration's policy on climate change, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants in favor of renewables and natural gas-fired plants that emit less CO2. But a new University of California-Irvine study published Wednesday in the journal Environmental Research Letters suggests that the country's push toward natural gas is not only a distraction from "decarbonizing' the U.S. and expanding renewable...
