Source: Erosion Control From drought to flood conditions, it seems there is no longer a normal growing season for Iowa farmers. A year of drought in 2012 was followed by a cool, wet spring this year. These types of weather extremes can be very damaging to Iowas soils, but conservationists are finding that farmers who apply soil health practices like cover crops are the least affected. read more

Has your soil moisture improved this spring?
2013-05-03 18:51:48| Corn & Soybean Digest
In March we asked about your confidence in a good crop start given the current soil moisture levels. In April, it seems the arrival of spring brought rain (or snow in some cases) to many areas of the Corn Belt. What are you soil conditions like now? Did you get enough precip this spring to replenish your soils? Did you get too much? Or are you still sitting in drought conditions? Take the poll and let us know! Feel free to leave comments with specifics and locations, too! We've overcome the drought levels and are on track for good soil moisture. We're still lacking a bit, but better off than 6 weeks ago. Still dry and in drought conditions. It's hard to see the soil under all this snow! Once it melts, we'll be good. We haven't taken the boat out to monitor soil yet. I think we've got enough moisture.
