Has your soil moisture improved this spring?
2013-05-03 18:51:48| Corn & Soybean Digest
In March we asked about your confidence in a good crop start given the current soil moisture levels. In April, it seems the arrival of spring brought rain (or snow in some cases) to many areas of the Corn Belt. What are you soil conditions like now? Did you get enough precip this spring to replenish your soils? Did you get too much? Or are you still sitting in drought conditions? Take the poll and let us know! Feel free to leave comments with specifics and locations, too! We've overcome the drought levels and are on track for good soil moisture. We're still lacking a bit, but better off than 6 weeks ago. Still dry and in drought conditions. It's hard to see the soil under all this snow! Once it melts, we'll be good. We haven't taken the boat out to monitor soil yet. I think we've got enough moisture. Fertilizers Provide Mixed Benefits to Soil in 50-Year Kansas Study
2013-04-29 21:20:17| Waste Management - Topix.net
The latest study to tackle this question has yielded mixed results. While 50 years of inorganic fertilization did increase soil organic carbon stocks in a long-term experiment in western Kansas, the practice seemingly failed to enhance soil aggregate stability-a key indicator of soil structural quality that helps dictate how water moves through ... Proposed Standard for Sediment Control Products Being Developed by ASTM Soil and Rock Committee
2013-04-26 06:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
ASTM WK11340, Test Method for Determination of Sediment Control Product’s Ability to Reduce Soil Loss Associated with Rainfall-Induced Erosion, will provide performance-based data of sediment control devices to regulating entities, specifiers, consumers and manufacturers. This proposed standard will offer means to calculate support practice factor (P factor), which would indicate how well sediment control device traps or filters sediment. Tillage Increases Soil Erosion: See for Yourself
2013-04-24 19:52:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
These three water samples reflect different degrees of tillage and live cover. A gentle overnight rain turned into a science experiment for Darin Williams, Waverly, Kan., when he collected these samples of drainage water from nearby ditch waterways. The samples come from a -mile radius of each other and have the same soil types. read more

Portugal: Wildfires can burn hot without ruining soil
2013-04-23 23:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: When scientists torched an entire 22-acre watershed in Portugal in a recent experiment, their research yielded a counterintuitive result: Large, hot fires do not necessarily beget hot, scorched soil. It's well known that wildfires can leave surface soil burned and barren, which increases the risk of erosion and hinders a landscape's ability to recover. But the scientists' fiery test found that the hotter the fire -- and the denser the vegetation feeding the flames -- the less the underlying soil...
