Naspers FY revenue rises 23% to USD 22.1 bln

(Telecompaper) Naspers has reported a 23 percent increase in revenue to USD 22.1 billion for the year ended 31 March from USD 19 billion in 2019, driven by e-commerce and growth at Tencent. Group trading profit grew 17 percent to USD 3.7 billion from USD 3.3 billion, as core Classifieds and core Payments businesses improved profitability even as it stepped up investment in Food Delivery.

(Telecompaper) Last week, Naspers listed its consumer internet unit Prosus in Amsterdam. Walt Disney unexpectedly launched its much anticipated Disney+ service in a single country, the Netherlands, for a free trial until the official launch date in November. Naspers, as a result of the partial spin-off of Prosus, lost 30 percent in week 37. Other than that, IAC was the biggest loser, down 7.1 percent. The winners included Salem Media (+22%), comScore (+16%) and ProSieben (+15%). Our Global Media index was up 0.5 percent for the week, against a gain of 1.0 percent for the S&P 500 index.

(Telecompaper) Last week, Naspers took the next step toward listing its Prosus unit in Amsterdam, while Mediaset is moving forward with its desire to combine its Italian and Spanish businesses. Walt Disney succeeded in offloading its last remaining sports network. The TPSI Global Media index ended week 35 up 2.9 percent, in step with the S&P 500's 2.8 percent gain. Year to date, the media sector maintained its lead over the general market, with a gain of 18.3 percent, ahead of 16.7 percent for the S&P 500.

(Telecompaper) The Telecompaper Stock Index Global Consumer Media was up 3.1 percent in week 25, ahead of the S&P 500 (+2.2%). News Corp (+14%) was the biggest winner, followed by two VOD providers: Netflix (+8.7%) and Bilibili (+8.2%). Seoul Broadcasting (-7.3%), comScore (-7.3%) and Atresmedia (-6.6%) were the weakest shares in our index.

(Telecompaper) Consolidation drove the media sector, last week. Vivendi acquired the unlisted M7 Group, Mediaset bought into ProSieben and Axel Springer could be taken private. The South African Naspers Group detailed the planned spin-off of its consumer internet group, to be listed in Amsterdam from 17 July. The Telecompaper Stock Index Global Consumer Media ended the week down 2.3 percent, slightly better than the S&P 500's loss of 2.6 percent. We recorded the largest gain for Axel Springer (+20% for the week) and the biggest loss for comScore (-11%).
