NIST Simulates New Method for fast, accurate DNA sequencing.
2016-01-20 14:31:10| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
By pulling DNA molecule through tiny, chemically activated hole in graphene and detecting changes in electrical current, researchers at NIST simulated new concept for rapid, accurate gene sequencing. NIST study, "Nucleobase-functionalized graphene nanoribbons for accurate high-speed DNA sequencing," suggests this method could identify ~66 billion bases/sec with 90% accuracy and 0 false positives. This might prove faster and cheaper than conventional DNA sequencing.

Corals respond to changing ocean conditions by altering regulation of the DNA message
2016-01-08 00:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: If an ocean gets too acidic for a coral's liking, it can't just swim away and find a nicer place to live. So how can corals survive in changing waters? Coral reefs sustain fisheries that feed millions of people, provide protection to coastlines from storms, and bolster economies through tourism. But with climate change altering ocean conditions important for healthy coral, the future of coral reefs is unclear. Dr. Hollie Putnam, a National Science Foundation Ocean Sciences Post-Doctoral Fellow,...

UPDATE 2-U.S. court rejects Sequenom bid to restore prenatal DNA test patent
2015-12-03 00:57:53| Biotech - Topix.net
Dec 2 A U.S. appeals court refused on Wednesday to reconsider its decision invalidating a Sequenom Inc prenatal DNA test patent, a decision that could put in doubt the validity of a wide range of medical and biotechnology patents. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington said in June the patent was not eligible for legal protection because it fell under the U.S. Supreme Court's rule against patenting natural phenomena.
DNA repair factor linked to breast cancer may also play a role in Alzheimer's disease
