Smartphone sales down 1.8% in Q2 as Huawei takes second spot from Apple

(Telecompaper) Global smartphone shipments fell for the third consecutive quarter in April to June, declining 1.8 percent to 342.0 million units compared to the 348.2 million units shipped a year earlier, according to the latest report from IDC. The fall was only the fourth quarterly decline in history, attributed to churn in some highly penetrated markets, although the report said many high growth markets still exist and should return smartphone shipments to overall growth. In terms of vendors, Huawei overtook Apple during the quarter to become the second largest smartphone company in terms of market share.

(Telecompaper) European smartphone shipments fell an unprecedented 6.3 percent year on year in the first 3 months of 2018, the largest ever single quarter decline, according to a report from Canalys. Western Europe fell the most, down 13.9 percent with 30.1 million units shipped, led by falls of 29.6 percent, 23.2 percent and 16.7 percent in the UK, France and Germany. Central and Eastern Europe, on the other hand, posted a 12.3 percent year on year growth with 15.9 million units shipped, driven by a 25.4 percent annual rise in Russia.

(Telecompaper) The first-ever contraction in the global smartphone market was confirmed by IDC, with the market researcher estimating a 0.5 percent fall to 1.46 billion phones shipped in 2017. A small return to growth is predicted for 2018, driven by improved growth at Apple.
