Reuters: EU member states on Tuesday agreed new rules to limit pollution from hundreds of thousands of medium-sized power plants that had previously escaped regulation. LA Times: The Supreme Court has blocked Obama administration rules designed to sharply limit the hazardous air pollutants that spew from the nation's power plants. The justices by a 5-4 vote agreed with the coal industry and Republican-led states that said the forced cutbacks were too costly and could lead to power outages. EPA Modifies Settlement with AL company to reduce air pollution.

In U.S. District Court for Northern District of Alabama, EPA and U.S. Department of Justice today lodged proposed modification of prior 2006 consent decree with Alabama Power Company. This will secure further reductions of harmful air pollutants, primarily sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx), from 3 of said company's coal-fired power plants. Proposed modifications would resolve remaining claims of violations of Clean Air Act's New Source Review program.

Officials discuss role agricultural industry plays in San Juan County river pollution

Officials involved in a recent study that found significant levels of a bacteria indicating the presence of human feces in the Animas and San Juan County rivers met Monday to talk about the agriculture industry's contribution to river pollution and best management practices. It was the third and last public outreach in a series of meetings to discuss the results , and about 20 people including representatives from the New Mexico Environment Department, the county, the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, BHP and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe attended.

Voters would get to decide whether to amend the New Jersey constitution this November to guarantee that money received by the state from pollution settlements be dedicated only for environmental purposes, under a resolution approved by the state Senate on Monday. The constitutional change is an effort to block Governor Christie from taking the bulk of a controversial $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil to balance the budget - a move he has made in past years with millions the state received from Passaic River polluters.
