Eutelsat orders VHTS satellite from Thales Alenia Space, signs deals with Orange and Thales

(Telecompaper) Eutelsat has announced that it has ordered a next-generation satellite to support its European fixed broadband and in-flight connectivity businesses. Named Konnect VHTS, the satellite will be built by Thales Alenia Space and is expected to enter into service in 2021. Eutelsat said that the project is backed by multi-year distribution commitments from Orange, which will re-sell broadband connectivity to rural households, and by Thales, which will target government and public-sector customers.

Thales outbids Atos to acquire Gemalto

(Telecompaper) The offer price represents a premium of 57 percent over the closing price of Gemalto stock on 8 December, before Atos made its bid. Thales said it will combine its digital assets with Gemalto within a new Global Business Unit, to be led by Gemalto CEO Philipps Vallee. Gemalto will continue under its own brand as one of the seven Thales global business units. Altogether, the new business unit will represent about 20 percent of pro forma group revenues and rank among the top three players worldwide, with EUR 3.5 billion revenues in the fast growing digital security market.
