Hiding In Plain Sight: Elusive Dark Matter May Be Detected With GPS Satellites
2014-11-19 08:33:11| rfglobalnet Home Page
The everyday use of a GPS device might be to find your way around town or even navigate a hiking trail, but for two physicists, the Global Positioning System might be a tool in directly detecting and measuring dark matter, so far an elusive but ubiquitous form of matter responsible for the formation of galaxies.
Musks next mission: Blanketing the world with cheap internet access, via 700 low-orbit satellites
2014-11-11 17:14:55| Extremetech
Elon Musk, capitalizing on SpaceX's unique ability to cheaply launch stuff into space, has announced that he's working on deploying a constellation of some 700 satellites, for the purpose of bringing "very low cost" internet access to everyone on Earth. Satellite internet access could be very useful in rural parts of North America and Europe, but it's the under-connected parts of the world (Asia, Africa, South America) that will be of more interest to Musk, both financially and ideologically.

Are Tiny Internet Satellites Twinkling in Musk's Eyes?
2014-11-11 00:57:38| TechNewsWorld
Elon Musk, CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla Motors, soon may be venturing into new territory: the Internet satellite sector. Musk reportedly is working with ex-Googler Greg Wyler, founder of WorldVu Satellites, on a $1 billion project to develop a fleet of 700 relatively small and inexpensive models that can be used to provide Internet access around the globe.

Over 350 EO satellites to be launched over next decade
2014-10-10 09:56:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) A total of 353 earth observation (EO) satellites are expected to be launched over the next decade compared to 162 over 2004-2013, according to a report from Euroconsult. The deployment will result in USD 36 billion in manufacturing revenues over the period, an 85 percent increase over the previous decade. In fact, investment in EO and meteorology programmes reached a high of USD 8.7 billion in 2013, a 13 percent increase over 2012, and the eighth consecutive year of investment growth, with EO remaining a primary concern for government space expenditures. The report predicts that organizations from 41 countries will launch EO satellite capacity by 2023, compared to 33 over the previous decade.

Satellites see hot spot of methane in US Southwest
2014-10-09 23:03:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: A surprising hot spot of the potent global-warming gas methane hovers over part of the southwestern U.S., according to satellite data. That result hints that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies considerably underestimate leaks of methane, which is also called natural gas. The higher level of methane is not a local safety or a health issue for residents, but factors in overall global warming. It is likely leakage from pumping methane out of coal mines. While methane isn't...
