As Energy and Environment Secretary Len Peters told a legislative committee last week, Kentucky is already facing the loss of the majority of its coal fleet over the next 25 years, and thats without the EPAs upcoming greenhouse gas regulations. Since its arrival on Saturday, M/V Double Progress, the first coal ship to dock at Seward's Alaska Railroad Terminal since last November, has been loading 72,000 metric tons of coal, bound for Japan. Aurora Energy Services, LLC says it will receive between two and four coal ships this year, or more if Usibelli Coal's Seward coal export facilities' subsidiary can get additional contracts.

Blue and Green: Despite pledging to take climate action five G7 countries have increased their coal use in the last five years, according to a report. It is estimated that coal plants in the G7 will cost the world $450 billion (294bn) a year by the end of the century and reduce crops by millions of tonnes. That Walter Energy is said to be close to filing for bankruptcy shouldn't come as a much of a surprise. Its shares trade for less than 50 cents as speculation that such a filing was in the offing made the rounds.
