Ontario's Liberal government plans to hike the tax on beer and sell a majority stake in Hydro One, a huge transmission utility, to raise about $4 billion to fund infrastructure projects. The government's revised agreement with the foreign-owned Beer Store shows it will raise $100 million a year "by applying a volumetric tax or markup" on all beer sold in Ontario.

Publix continues battle with Kroger for North Carolina with new stores in metro Charlotte, Raleigh

Publix Super Markets Inc. continues to focus heavily on North Carolina, this time by buying two vacant grocery stores in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas. The Lakeland-based grocer said Tuesday that it acquired two vacant Lowes Foods stores, in Cary and Gastonia.

Following its fall 2014 opening in Philadelphia, the chain recently inked a lease for an 85,000-sq.-ft. store in Sawgrass Mills in South Florida. "As we have discussed, these initiatives are very important for the long-term, but there will be some disruption in the short-term due to continued sell off of floor samples, implementing new product through our manufacturing and increasing our operating expenses," Chief Executive Farooq Kathwari said in a statement. The company is expecting third-quarter EPS of 18 cents, below the FactSet consensus of 22 cents.
