Defying drizzle: UK to build worlds fastest weather forecasting supercomputer
2014-10-28 19:02:42| Extremetech
You have to admit it makes sense: The country that spends the most time per capita whining about the weather -- the United Kingdom -- is investing in the world's fastest weather forecasting supercomputer. When it's complete, the Met Office's new supercomputer will clock in at 16 petaflops -- one of the fastest supercomputers in the world, and more than twice as powerful as the next-fastest weather forecasting computer.

How to build your own 1:10 scale Cray-1 supercomputer
2014-10-13 19:53:20| Extremetech
The Cray-1, released in 1976, was one of the most successful supercomputers of all time. The Freon-cooled computer was clocked at a heady 80MHz and capable of up to 250 megaflops -- much more than any other computer on the market at the time -- and best of all it looked like something out of Star Trek. Now, an enterprising hardware hacker has made his own Cray-1 supercomputer -- or at least, a 1:10 scale model of it -- using some wood, paint, and a Xilinx FPGA development board.

Whats it like to unbox a supercomputer? Surprisingly, just like unboxing a normal PC
2014-08-01 19:37:46| Extremetech
I don't know about you, but unboxing new gadgets gets me pretty excited. For me, it's knowing that soon -- very soon now, after I cut through the bubble wrap or peel back the protective plastic -- the device will burst into life for the very first time. If I'm honest, it actually makes me feel like Frankenstein breathing life into his monster for the first time -- especially when I unbox a bunch of components and build them into a new PC. What, then, must it feel like to unbox a brand new petascale supercomputer?
