Wildlife recovery in Prince William Sound has been extensive enough to warrant closing federal and state legal actions against Exxon Mobil from the 1989 crude oil spill from the Exxon Valdez tanker, the Justice Department and Alaska Department of Law say. A 1991 civil settlement required XOM to pay the U.S. and Alaska governments $900M over 10 years to reimburse past costs and fund restoration of injured natural resources.

Deal cuts BNSF's potential hazardous spill fines by 90 percent

Burlington Northern Santa Fe would be fined $71,700 for failing to timely report several hazardous materials spills, including two in Everett, under a settlement reached with Utilities and Transportation Commission staff. Under the proposed deal, commissioners would suspend $40,000 of the penalty as long as the company commits no new violations of the statewide accident reporting rules in the next year.

Transocean, states agree to $30M-plus compensation for 2010 Gulf oil spill

The five Gulf of Mexico states reach a settlement with Transocean , the owner of the offshore drilling rig involved in the 2010 BP oil spill, leading to the official dismissal of federal lawsuits against the company. Alabama Gov. Bentley said last week that RIG would pay the state $20M to resolve legal claims; documents from the other states this week indicate Louisiana will get $4M, Texas $2M and Florida $5M, while Mississippi's share has not been released.
