U.S. stocks surged on Friday, curbing weekly losses after a three-day slide, with investors embracing reassurances from Fed Chair Janet Yellen that the U.S. economy is stable enough to handle turbulence overseas. "The market was encouraged by what Janet Yellen had to say -- it was a vote of confidence in the economy," Gus Faucher, a senior economist at PNC Financial Services Group, said of an address by the Fed chair after the market closed on Thursday.
