2014-02-17 06:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: A second Canadian pipeline project to the United States is now facing delays as operator Enbridge Inc awaits a U.S. presidential permit, a development that may strain prices for Alberta oil sands crude and relations between the two countries. Enbridge, Canada's largest pipeline company, said it no longer expects to get the permit amendment it needs to expand its Alberta Clipper line in time to start pumping extra oil on it at midyear as it had planned. It applied for the permit in November 2012....
Kerry burnishes his green badge in Asia ahead of Keystone call
2014-02-16 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said global warming is as big a threat as terrorism in a speech in the worlds largest exporter of coal for power plants, seeking to burnish his credential as a climate champion before deciding on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline project. Speaking in the capital Jakarta, the last stop on his three-nation Asia tour, Kerry called on the international community -- nations and individuals -- to do more now as addressing climate change required a global solution....

Wall Street Journal: Wealthy environmentalist and political donor Tom Steyer is causing anxiety for Democrats by campaigning to kill the Keystone XL pipeline and criticizing Democrats who support it, according to Democratic lawmakers and campaign consultants. Next week he will host a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee fundraiser for environmental alliance candidates at his home in San Francisco. Then he will fly to Washington, D.C., to moderate a...

National Geographic: Climate change has been the focus of much of the opposition to TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline. But many conservationists are also concerned about more immediate environmental consequences. They're worried about the pipeline construction's impact on wildlife and ecosystems, and of possible spills of the heavy crude oil that will flow through the pipeline at the rate of 830,000 barrels a day. (See related: "Interactive: Mapping the Flow of Tar Sands Oil.") Some people, seeing a map of the...
12 reasons to reject Keystone XL
2014-02-14 00:47:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Rainforest Action Network: Its not a matter of if Keystone XL will spill, but when. Pipelines carrying tar sands have a horrible track record. In early 2013, 80,000 gallons of tar sands crude devastated a residential neighborhood in Mayflower, AK. And 2010 saw the worst oil spill in Michigan State history when a tar sands pipeline spilled 900,000 gallons into the Kalamazoo River. TransCanada, the company building Keystone XL, might have the worst record of any pipeline company. Its Keystone 1 pipeline, the predecessor...
