Pressure is on Kerry as Keystone pipeline decision nears
2014-02-01 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: "This is the gut-check moment,' Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org, said during a telephone news conference held Friday afternoon by some of Keystone's most prominent foes in the environmental movement. That means that neither side intends to ease up on Kerry, who has spent his career battling climate change. The 1,179-mile northern leg of the pipeline has become the most visible symbol of human-induced global warming that environmental activists are fighting, and they have promised to redouble...

Tom Steyers Response to the Keystone XL Final Environmental Impact Statement
2014-02-01 15:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
EcoWatch: First of all, this is President Obamas decision, and the State Departments Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) is just an input. So we dont have an answer yet, and the fight is far from over. I remain hopeful that the President will, in fact, apply the test for Keystone he established in his speech at Georgetown University: that the project cannot be approved if it increases the amount of carbon pollution being put into our air, which it does. But the release Friday of a long-awaited government report removes a major excuse for delay,...

The State Department concluded in its final environmental assessment issued Friday that the proposed Keystone XL pipeline would be unlikely to alter global greenhouse gas emissions, but officials cautioned that they were still weighing whether or not the project would meet the test of President Barack Obama's broader climate strategy.

Keystone XL foes undaunted by State Dept. report
2014-02-01 11:14:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: With yet another obstacle removed for the Keystone XL pipeline, opponents were pressing forward with a lawsuit to challenge the project, public protests and an effort to inject the issue into the November elections. Supporters and opponents both were quick to claim victories with the U.S. State Department report released Friday, which raised no major objections to the pipeline. The oil industry, some union groups and congressional Republicans called on the Obama administration to move forward...
