The new option lets developers test mobile applications directly on the devices that will run them. About 80 percent of software and application testing is performed manually. FAA dedicated its new National Airport Pavement & Materials Research Center at the William J. Hughes Technical Center at Egg Harbor Township, N.J. Center allows FAA engineers to use custom-designed vehicle simulator (Heavy Vehicle Simulator-Airfields) to test asphalt and other pavement materials at very high tire pressures and temperatures. FAA will also be able to research environmentally friendly airport pavement materials such as warm-mix and recycled asphalt pavements.

FAA released beta version of B4UFLY smartphone application for testing by up to 1,000 unmanned aircraft users. Aimed primarily at model aircraft enthusiasts, app gives users information about restrictions or requirements in effect at their current or planned flight location. Status indicator function considers airspace, proximity to airports, temporary flight restrictions, and current law. FAA expects beta test will yield valuable data on how well B4UFLY functions and uncover any software bugs.
