New needs for higher temporal, spatial and spectral resolution, new instruments, all this becomes reality with the Earth observation missions operated by our customer EUMETSAT in 2021. For our team onsite EUMETSAT, we are looking for a Scientific Software Developer Physicist to develop complex software solutions for a new stateoftheart EO instrument, the Lightning Imager onboard the upcoming Meteosat Third Generation MTG mission. The position is fulltime and permanent and expected starting date will be around NovemberDecember 2021. We are looking forward to meeting you! Your Responsibilities Your principal task will be the development and evolution of the LI STAtistical and Reporting LISTAR Offline Tools. Due to the complexity of LI data the development of the associated Processing Visualization Tool Graphic User Interface LIPVT GUI will also be an essential part of this position. Of course, you will perform extensive validation of the above tools prior to launch. After the launch of the first MTG MTGI1, you will provide agile evolution, development, and maintenance to enable the production of results during the MTGI1 Commissioning. During LI operations you will also design and develop additional tools and functionalities. Background In addition to the Ground Segment Facilities, an Engineering Environment is part of the MTG system. It hosts several OffLine Tools OFTs which provide additional engineering functions for the analysis of performances, scientific investigations, validation, and improvement preparations. The LISTAR will be employed during the MTGI LI commissioning for the assessment of instrument performances and for instrument monitoring during operations. The reporting and monitoring functionalities are based on the existing CHARTcore. The LIPVT GUI will be used for visualisation and fast browsing of processing outcomes. Both tools are written in Python and use the operational LI Level 1 and Level 2 products as inputs. Where applicable, the data readers are developed under PytrollSatpymodule. Qualification and Experience What are we looking for? Maybe for you, with at least a University degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, or related subjects. With your 3 years of experience in processing satellite or meteorological data. Of course, you are easily understanding the relating physics processes in such satellite instruments. Essential Skills You are daily working with Python in a LinuxUnix environment and the latest software development tools and methods are your daily business. We dont have to tell you about processing and plotting of scientific results i.e., xarray, NumPy, pandas, scipy, matplotlib, data visualization i.e., Cartopy, and using Python interfaces to access a PostgreSQL database. You have already gained experience with representing scientific data for Remote Sensing applications and the optimization of processing of large amounts of data i.e. out of core computing using xarraydask. Furthermore, you have proven experience in the definition and maintenance of PostgreSQL databases and the utilization of the NetCDF format. Teamwork and ones own initiative is what you enjoy Capable of working both individually and independently on assigned responsibilities, while you are part of the system team. We are of course looking for good interpersonal and communication skills! NonEssential Skills Ideally, you know already a lot about the area of Aerosol andor Cloud extraction from satellite imagery, image processing algorithms, operational data processing. Experience in the EUMETSAT developments or facilities is more than welcome! Furthermore, the knowledge and experience with Jupyter notebooks and SatpyPytroll are more than just an advantage!
