Indian Express: IN THE strongest-ever push for a global agreement on climate change, leaders and monarchs from nearly 150 countries will assemble under one roof here on Monday, hoping that the show of solidarity would force a different result from the one six years ago when they last gathered in such numbers for the same cause. Unlike any previous climate change meeting -- an annual year-end event -- the two-week conference in Paris will kickstart with the high-profile presence of heads of states and governments...

New York Times: After two decades of talks that failed to slow the relentless pace of global warming, negotiators from almost 200 countries are widely expected to sign a deal in the next two weeks to take concrete steps to cut emissions. The prospect of progress, any progress, has elicited cheers in many quarters. New York Times: As world leaders meet in Paris on Monday to kick off two weeks of talks aimed at shaping safe targets for emissions of greenhouse gases, Bill Gates will be in town, as well, to announce a modest first step toward bolstering the basic energy research and technology development that will be needed to meet those targets affordably. The gap between the modest, but creditable, emissions pledges so far and any reasonable trajectory toward avoiding dangerous climate change is huge, as I wrote recently....

Independent: At least 24 climate change activists have been put under house arrest by French police. They are accused of defying a ban on organising protests during next week's 2015 UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. Three people have been placed under house arrest in Rens, two in Paris, two in Rouen and one in Lyons, according to a campaigns website collating information about police actions against activists. They are only allowed to leave their houses three times a day to sign a post office register...
