About 2.5 million Chromebooks were sold globally in 2013, or about 1 percent of the entire PC market, according to market research firm IDC. But most of those sales were driven by consumers, not by enterprise users. The Chromebook, introduced in 2011, is still an outlier for most businesses, even as it becomes an alternative for consumers and schools. By 2017, IDC expects the Chromebook to reach about 6 million shipments, or more than 2 percent of the PC market. (There were 314.6 million PCs shipped in 2013.)

In my mind, 2014 is shaping up to be Apple's wildest year in the post-Jobs era. Last year, we saw a lot of incremental innovations from Apple but no thunderous new products. Sure, the new Mac Pro is insanely small, quiet and super sexy -- not to mention manufactured in America, which is no small feat these days -- but it's also a niche product for professionals.

At long last, some 15 months after its initial release, the combined market share for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 has finally passed 10%. Buoyed by Christmas sales, the market share for Windows 8 and 8.1 at the end of December 2013 surged forward by 1.2% -- the largest single-month gain for Microsoft's kinda-mobile-kinda-desktop operating system.
