Huawei successfully tests 100G-PON network

2014-10-27 08:55:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Huawei said that its optical access innovation lab has developed a 100G-Passive Optical Network (100G-PON) optical access. The new ultra-broadband technology uses a hybrid time-division and wavelength-division architecture to support a 4x25 Gbps downstream rate and a 4x10 Gbps upstream rate, enabling 100 Gbps access rate per port on existing optical distribution networks (ODNs). The technology also establishes compatibility between 100G PON and GPON/10GPON/40G TWDM PON. Huawei said the system will be able to meet the increasing demands of home bandwidth, including cloud services, smart home services and 4K or 8K ultra-high definition videos. The 100G-PON system can also support backhaul for Fibre to the Curb/Basement/Office and mobile stations. The new technology was successfully tested over a 20 km transmission. Huawei said it is confident the system will be able to support 200 Gbps per port by supporting more wavelength paths.

Huawei smartphone shipments up 26% in Q3 to 16.8 mln

2014-10-23 11:55:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Huawei Technologies said its third-quarter smartphone shipments jumped 26 percent year-on-year to 16.8 million worldwide. About a quarter of those were mid- to high-end models, more than twice as many as the same period last year. "We are breaking our bottlenecks of mid- to high-end models step by step, especially in overseas markets," Huawei consumer business group marketing executive Shao Yang told Reuters in an interview. To further expand in the high end of the market, Huawei plans to increase its global marketing budget at least 30 percent in 2015, compared with USD 440 million this year, he said. The company has shipped 51 million smartphones globally in the first three quarters of 2014, about 63.8 percent of its annual shipment target of 80 million. Shao said he expected quarter-on-quarter shipments growth of up to 80 percent in the fourth quarter. A little more than half of Huawei's smartphone shipments went to China in the third quarter. Elsewhere, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific recorded the strongest growth.
