Well it was a fairly quiet week here in the Linux blogosphere, as much of the mainstream tech world staggered directly out of their New Year's revelries and into the halls of CES. Not that Linux didn't have a presence at the gargantuan show, mind you. It was there, all right -- not just in phones but in TVs, smartwatches and cars, to name just a few examples.

Microchip Technology Inc. has made a deal with the Linux Foundation to enable designers who use the Linux operating system with Microchip's portfolio of MOST infotainment and driver safety network technology. Microchip Technology Inc. is announcing Tuesday it has joined the Linux Foundation and Automotive Grade Linux to develop software for the connected car, the Phoenix Business Journal has discovered exclusively.

Its efforts have resulted in more than 1,000 companies joining forces to become the largest defense patent management organization in history. HP reveals more details about The Machine: Linux++ OS coming 2015, prototype in 2016

Back in June, HP announced that it would be plowing almost all of its R&D efforts into a brand new type of computer called The Machine. At the time, HP provided very few details -- but now we have a rough timeline for the first working prototype of The Machine (2016), and news that the operating system for The Machine, called Linux++, will be released as early as June 2015.
