EPSSG Instrument Functional Chain Engineer

Do you want to join the team responsible for the overall system engineering activities for end to end instrument functional chains on the next generation of Polar Orbiting satellites due for launch in 2021? EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, pulling together the resources of 30 Member States. We observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces from Space using a system of satellites, 365 days a year, offering images and data to provide insights into weather situations, environmental hazards and climate change. Our work helps users worldwide to monitor changes in these to protect lives, lifestyles and properties. With the development of the second generation of our EUMETSAT Polar System EPSSG including six MetopSG satellites, we are shaping our future. We have a new vacancy for Instrument Functional Chain Engineers to work on the development and preparation for operations of the EPSSG. This role offers you the opportunity to utilise and develop your existing experience and knowledge of space applications alongside other industry experts on our largest satellite development programme. You will require the confidence to work comfortably within a complex system environment and have the skills to operate in a transverse manner, dealing with many engineering problems and different teams simultaneously. Within the EPSSG System and Operations Preparation Team, reporting to the Instrument Functional Chain Teams IFCT Coordinator, you will be responsible for system engineering activities across the end to end instrument functional chains. This is an opportunity to prepare for and participate in the inorbit commissioning activities of the MetopSG satellites. You will manage the production and maintenance of system level instrument chain requirements, help to define the algorithms to achieve mission requirements and support the generation of necessary scientific test data to ensure suitability for end to end performances. You will compile performance budgets as information evolves from the design, development and test activities associated with the instruments, satellites and the ground segment. With a degree in Science or Engineering, you will have at least 3 years experience in system engineering activities related to satellitebased earth observation systems and should also have been involved in the development and testing of satellite payloads andor the onground processing systems. We would expect you to demonstrate a system level understanding of instrument end to end chains with the ability to produce end to end performance budgets. Most importantly you will be a team player who is comfortable collaborating with our partners to identify solutions to drive this project forward. As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. The expertise group Instrument Science has a vacancy for an Optical Instrument scientist fm Vac. nr. 1257 You will be part of the Instrument Science Group where optical experts contribute to space instruments ranging from Earth Observation and Exoplanet characterization in the visible and near infrared wavelength bands, to cryogenically cooled instruments for Astrophysics in the far infrared. Project Within the climate and air quality program of SRON, you will work on the development of novel optical instrumentation for Earth Observation. Your responsibility will be in performance analysis of space spectrometers and polarimeters. Furthermore, you will develop test setups and perform the calibration onground and inorbit of these optical instruments. You will work in a diverse team together with space industry and knowledge institute team members. SRON projects are carried out in Dutch national context in collaboration with international space industry and agencies. Tasks The candidate will perform the following tasks As part of a system engineering team, contribute as performance specialist to the development of advanced optical payloads Act as calibration scientist in flight hardware projects Emphasis on design, development and analysis of instrument calibration Analyze optical performance test results Present results in documents, scientific articles and presentations. Contribute to the development of new concepts for next generation optical payloads Candidate shall show the potential and ambition to grow into the position of Lead Instrument ScientistSystem Engineer, overseeing multiple disciplines and act as the technical responsible lead Profile The candidate shall have an excellent track record meeting most of the following requirements Ph D. in a discipline related to instrumentation e.g. Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy Handson experience with development of optical instrumentation or performing optical experiments Handson experience with detector arrays in the visual andor infrared wavelength ranges covering the complete signal chain Strong programming skills, preferably in Python andor C Experience with analysis of the performance of an optical instrument or setup Experience with System Engineering or proven ability to work systematically having an overview beyond the boundaries of your own discipline Wellstructured and goal oriented approach training in project management skills is beneficial.
