This post is classified in the A2A4 grade band of the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. LOCATION ESTEC, Noordwijk The Netherlands. DUTIES The Scientific Support Office provides project and study scientist support to the Directorates missions throughout all mission phases including study, implementation and operations and is responsible for ensuring that maximum scientific return is achieved within the technical and programmatic constraints. Mars is a terrestrial planet with many similarities to the Earth and with the potential for having hosted life. ESA has established the ExoMars programme to investigate the Martian environment and to demonstrate new technologies, which will pave the way for future Mars sample return missions. Two missions are foreseen within the ExoMars programme the first consists of a trace gas orbiter and an entry, descent and landing demonstrator and the second includes a surface platform and a rover. In addition, ESAs Mars Express mission has been orbiting the planet for more than 10 years and is delivering results on its geology, atmosphere and surface environment. Reporting to the Head of the Scientific Support Office, the main tasks of the postholder will include providing scientific expertise and support to the ExoMars programme and to the Mars Express mission particularly in the fields of geology, geophysics and geochemistry, including related outreach and communications activities providing scientific input and guidance to the development and execution of the science operations of the above missions preparing internal and external reports, including reports to the ESA advisory structure as requested providing scientific support to other ESA missions or studies as required performing scientific research, focussing on the geosciences of terrestrial planets. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent degree in the field of planetary geosciences with a strong background in geology, geophysics and geochemistry. They should have substantial experience in processing and interpreting planetary mission data from a range of instruments such as visible and multispectral imagers, radars, etc. but also from the instruments typically found in landed missions. A research background in areas such as comparative planetary evolution, terrestrial or planetary sedimentology and volcanology, surfaceatmospheric interactions and astrobiology would be an advantage. Expertise in instrument development, operations and calibration would be an asset. A demonstrated ability in the organisation of scientific projects and team management is important. Good communication skills and a proactive attitude to problem solving are valuable assets. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required together with a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset.
