Global carbon emissions almost stall but warming can become faster

International Business Times: With the Paris climate talks around the corner, there is good and bad news for the future. A study shows that the total greenhouse gas output rate has almost stalled. It increased by just 0.5% in 2014 compared to the 3-4% in the first decade of this century. However, a Swedish study shows that warming can increase due to the effect of man-made emissions on natural emissions. A cut in the former can help substantially reduce the warming. China's slow economic growth, its shift to clean energy...

Rapid plankton growth in ocean seen sign carbon dioxide loading

2015-11-27 20:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: A microscopic marine alga is thriving in the North Atlantic to an extent that defies scientific predictions, suggesting swift environmental change as a result of increased carbon dioxide in the ocean, a study led a by Johns Hopkins University scientist has found. What these findings mean remains to be seen, however, as does whether the rapid growth in the tiny plankton's population is good or bad news for the planet. Published Thursday in the journal Science, the study details a tenfold increase...

Carbon prices - work in progress, not panacea, for rich & poor

2015-11-27 18:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: It was supposed to be the way the market would cut greenhouse gases by itself: governments selling companies permits-to-pollute, which they could trade among themselves. Over time, the number of permits would be reduced, and the cost to companies of failing to cut emissions would rise. Yet, 10 years after the EU launched the world's biggest carbon trading scheme, the effectiveness of the concept is in question and climate activists are disenchanted or hostile. While there is still support for...

Australia: Federal Government minister labels Labor's 2030 carbon emission reduction 'mad' policy

2015-11-27 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Australian Broadcasting Corporation: Opposition leader Bill Shorten's decision to float a possible 45 per cent cut in Australia's carbon emissions by 2030 is a "mad" thought bubble, according to Coalition frontbencher Christopher Pyne. Mr Shorten unveiled the plan today along with a pledge to work towards carbon neutrality - meaning all emissions would need to be offset - by 2050. "The Climate Change Authority recommended a baseline emissions reduction of 45 per cent by 2030, on 2005 levels," Mr Shorten told the Lowy Institute....
