Vodafone returns to growth in EBITDA, service revenue in H1

2015-11-10 08:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Vodafone reported a return to organic EBITDA growth in the first half and said it expects to reach the high end of its annual organic EBITDA outlook. EBITDA increased 1.9 percent on an organic basis to GBP 5.786 billion in the fiscal first half to September, and revenues rose 2.8 percent to GBP 20.266 billion. Organic service revenue was up 1.0 percent year-on-year to GBP 18.430 billion, as growth of 6.4 percent in Africa, Asia and the Middle East offset a 1.3 percent fall in Europe. Reported EBITDA was still down 1.7 percent, and revenues fell 2.3 percent, hurt by currency effects. Vodafone said it will switch to reporting in euros from 2017 in order to limit the forex effect. Vodafone posted a net loss for the first half of GBP 1.584 billion, versus a profit of GBP 5.501 billion a year ago, due to a provision for deferred tax after revaluation of assets held in Luxembourg. Its free cash flow moved to a negative GBP 541 million in the first half, due to increased capital spending under its Project Spring, but the company still expects positive cash flow over the full year. Vodafone increased its interim dividend by 2.2 percent to 3.68 pence per share.

Vodacom Group H1 revenue grows 6.4%, EBITDA increases 13%

2015-11-09 08:43:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group reported 6.4 percent increase in its revenue for six months ended 30 September to ZAR 39.96 billion. Group EBITDA rose 13.0 percent year-on-year to ZAR 14.7 billion, and the margin was up 2.1 percent points to 36.7 percent. Group operating profit increased 7.8 percent to ZAR 10.17 billion, mainly due to EBITDA growth, partly offset by higher depreciation and amortisation. Capital expenditure rose to ZAR 6.22 billion from ZAR 5.88 billion in 2014, driven by rapidly expanding LTE coverage and increasing speeds. Headline earnings per share were up 6.0 percent to ZAR 4.40. The group declared a ZAR 3.95 interim dividend per share, up 5.3 percent from a year ago. Vodacom said its markets continue to be highly competitive, and regulatory and macroeconomic risks remain. EBITDA growth will not likely be sustained at the high rate of 13 percent in the second half. The second half will carry high costs for publicity and network and capability development in fibre and content. Year-over-year growth will be impacted by the stronger performance in the second half of last year where profitability stepped up as a result of efficiency initiatives. Also, there is a further reduction in MTR in South Africa from October, which will have a slightly negative effect on Vodacom's margin in the second half.

Net income decreased by 18 percent to KWD 38 million or KWD 0.010 per share. The Middle East mobile operator served 45.6 million customers as of 30 September, a 4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2014. Chairman Asaad Al Banwan said the board is working closely with the executive management team to prudently deal with the rise in competition and other currency and social challenges in several key markets. In the year to date, the company's results were impacted by the stronger US dollar, increased amortisation for new spectrum licences as well as higher taxes and social unrest in Iraq. He said the group remains focused on further strengthening its presence while at the same time investing in network upgrades across the territories.
