Brave Browser Caught Redirecting URLs for Cash

A browser that has received plaudits for privacy protection has been exposed for redirecting Web searches to make money. Brave, a browser with some 15 million monthly users, has been redirecting searches for cryptocurrency companies to links that produce revenue for the browser's owners through advertising affiliate programs. Brave CEO Brendan Eich said the company would correct the "mistake."

Google Chrome's experiment with killing URLs appears to be on hold

Google appears to be backing away from its somewhat controversial experimental feature for the Chrome browser that hid full Web addresses from users. Dubbed the Origin Chip, the new feature condenses the Web address of the page you're viewing into a small tile on the far left of Chrome's address bar.

Safari on OS X Yosemite will mask most of a URL in its top-of-window address bar, following in the footsteps of Safari on iOS, and beating Google's Chrome, which is experimenting with the same design, to the desktop. While not strictly a trend, the decision by Apple to mask all but the domain -- say, nytimes.com or computerworld.com -- will bring a simmering discussion about the value of a full-string URL to the surface when customers first fire up Safari on Yosemite this fall.
