Microsoft fixes SkyDrive problem, issues persist with Outlook.com

Microsoft has resolved a problem that affected SkyDrive Wednesday, but technical issues with Outlook.com have proven harder to fix.The glitches surfaced at around 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday and the SkyDrive problem was declared fixed at around 2 p.m.While access to affected Outlook.com accounts had been restored, Microsoft was still working to fix an issue affecting syncing of emails with mobile devices.

Microsoft Sets Oct. 18 Arrival Date for Spiffed-Up Windows 8.1

Microsoft on Wednesday announced that it will begin rolling out Windows 8.1 to the general public on Oct. 18. Win 8.1 will be available as a free update for Windows 8 users through the Windows Store, and it will also be available at retail outlets and on new devices running the Windows OS. Microsoft appears to be banking heavily on the back-to-school shopping season to push Windows 8.1.

Microsoft names Oct. 18 for Windows 8.1 launch

Microsoft today named Oct. 18 as the launch date for Windows 8.1, the update it hopes will be better received than the original, which debuted the year before. "Starting at 12:00 a.m. on October 18 in New Zealand (that's 4:00 a.m. October 17 in Redmond, Wash.), Windows 8.1 will begin rolling out worldwide as a free update for consumers on Windows 8 through the Windows Store," said spokesman Brandon LeBlanc.

Microsoft moves to block MD5 certificates and improve RDP authentication

Microsoft released two optional security updates Tuesday to block digital certificates that use the MD5 hashing algorithm and to improve the network-level authentication for the Remote Desktop Protocol. These two updates are separate from important security patches also released Tuesday for Internet Explorer, Windows and Microsoft Exchange Server, and are not yet being pushed through the Windows Update mechanism.
