(Telecompaper) AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile US and Verizon have taken the first steps to modernise SMS texts to GSMA's Rich Communications Service (RCS) industry standard. The three operators have created a new joint venture called the Cross Carrier Messaging Initiative (CCMI) that will bring this next generation of messaging to consumers and businesses. The venture will develop and deploy first with Android, probably next year, together with other companies in the RCS ecosystem.

Verizon slams AT&T for using 5G network call signal

(Telecompaper) Verizon has called on the mobile industry to not use the term 5G for services until they use actual 5G hardware and radio standards. The operator's call follows reports that AT&T customers have seen a 5Ge network symbol appear already on the their phones. The 5Ge refers to 5G Evolution, AT&T's name for its LTE-Advanced upgrade.

DoJ investigates AT&T, Verizon, GSMA for possible eSim collusion

(Telecompaper) The US Justice Department (DoJ) s looking into whether AT&T, Verizon and GSMA made it difficult for people to easily switch mobile carriers by blocking or hindering the use of eSims, the New York Times reported, citing six sources with knowledge of the inquiry. The DoJ) asked the parties in February for information on potential collusion to thwart eSim, a technology that lets people remotely switch mobile provider without having to insert a new Sim card into a device, two of the sources said. AT&T and Verizon face accusations that they colluded with the GSMA to try to establish standards that would allow them to lock a device to their network even if it had eSim technology.
