IBM's Power7+ remains alive with new integrated servers

IBM's decision to license its future Power8 processor to third parties doesn't mean life has ended for the current Power 7+, which will go alongside x86 chips into new PureFlex System preconfigured servers announced on Wednesday. The new servers are targeted for hybrid cloud deployments. The single-chassis PureFlex System Express is aimed at small and medium-size businesses and has an "affordable entry price point," IBM said. The more expensive PureFlex System Enterprise is an is a high-uptime server available in multiple configurations.

IBM's new Power8 doubles performance of Watson chip

IBM for the first time revealed details on Monday of its 12-core Power8 chip, which is twice as fast as the Power7 chip used in the Watson supercomputer. To make the chip faster, IBM has turned to a more advanced manufacturing process, increased the clock speed and added more cache memory, but perhaps the biggest change heralded by the Power8 cannot be found in the specifications.
