Vit plant lays off about 100 craft workers

About 100 construction craft workers have been laid off at the Hanford vitrification plant since the first of the year, according to Bechtel National. The mix of construction skills needed is changing as some of the focus of the work on the plant's High Level Waste Facility shifts to work on the Low Activity Waste Facility, the Analytical Laboratory and the support buildings and facilities for the plant.

The Hanford vitrification plant contractor, Bechtel National, has been slow to spot problems with items it purchases for the huge plant and has not been aggressive enough about recovering the costs, according to a new audit by the Department of Energy Office of Inspector General. In one example, Bechtel did not identify piping for high-level radioactive waste that had a bend 90 degrees off from specifications until September 2013, more than nine years after it was delivered to Hanford, the audit said.

Bechtel National employees work on concrete at the 58-foot elevation of the Hanford vitrification plant's High Level Waste Facility. The Department of Energy is proposing having the Hanford vitrification plant fully operating in 2039, a delay of 17 years from the current schedule, after a federal judge pressed it for a concrete deadline proposal.

Vit plant contractor awarded for worker safety

Bechtel National has been awarded the Voluntary Protection Program Star of Excellence for worker safety at the Hanford vitrification plant project, after achieving is lowest injury rate in the history of the project. The award is DOE's highest for safety.
