Source: American Society of Animal Science Lactose is an important ingredient of swine diets – but the source of digestible sugar has become costly in recent years. In research at North Carolina State University presented at the Midwest Animal Science meeting this week in Des Moines, IA, J. Gou explained how chocolate candy can fill in as a source of lactose in weaned pig diets. Gou found that chocolate candy can supply up to 45% of lactose without affecting pig performance. read more

Smithfield Awards Grants to Enhance Swine Industry

Source: Iowa Pork Industry Center Grant funds totaling up to $250,000 are available for projects that advance and enhance swine production in Iowa, according to Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller. Proposals are due by April 19. The grant money is for the seventh year of a program funded by Smithfield Foods, which is paying $1 million over 10 years for the program. Miller released a “Request for Applications” (RFA) to identify and support innovative Iowa projects eligible for the grants. read more

To determine if it makes economic sense to use them, producers need to know the concentrations and digestibility of the nutrients they contain. To help them make the decision, Stein and his team of researchers examined amino acid digestibility for these products. read more
