Majestic profits drop but Naked Wines deal provides hope

Annual profits at Majestic Wine dropped by nearly a quarter in the year to 31 March, though the retailer gave an optimistic outlook on the back of its recent acquisition of Naked Wines. The AIM group, which bought the customer-funded online wine business for A 70m in April, reported a pre-tax profit of A 18.4m, down 22.5% from A 23.8m the year before.

Tensions are rising in the alcohol industry as a review of taxes may change the price tag for beer, wine and spirits. Accolade Wines, the second largest wine company in Australia, is angry with its two major rivals, Treasury Wine Estates and Pernod Ricard, who are pushing for a flat tax for all wine.
