The big red hammer will hit UK shoppers in as little as eight weeks as Wesfarmers rolls out the Bunnings brand across a handful of Homebase stores in time for the warm summer weather. It's understood Wesfarmers will rebrand up to nine Homebase stores as Bunnings, to capture the spike in demand for homewares, hardware and garden supplies during the northern hemisphere summer.

Bunnings, the home-improvement retailer, is opening a further five stores in New Zealand as it benefits from an uplift in housing construction and renovation, particularly in Auckland. The retailer with stores in Australia and New Zealand is part of ASX-listed Wesfarmers whose other retail brands include Coles supermarkets and the Kmart and Target department store chains.

Net profit was A$1.4 billion in the six months ended Dec.31, compared to A$1.37 billion a year earlier, while the retail portfolio had a 9.2 percent boost in earnings before interest and tax to A$176 million following good Christmas season trading in all businesses, the company said. Revenue rose 4.7 percent to A$33.5 billion despite stiff competition in the supermarket sector from Woolworths and Aldi impacting Coles, its largest business.

Wesfarmers will spend over a billion dollars rolling out the Bunnings hardware brand to the United Kingdom and Ireland within five years, following the NZ$752 million acquisition of home improvement chain Homebase. The Coles owner confirmed on Monday that Homebase's parent company, Home Retail Group, had approved its bid for the chain, which is the second largest in its market.
