Scott Shearer, Bockorny Group, Washington, DC U.S., Canadian, and Mexican meat and livestock organizations filed their initial brief as part of an appeal of a September 11 decision by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia denying a motion for a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit to block implementation of the USDAs final rule on country-of-origin labeling (COOL). The organizations argue that the trial court incorrectly accepted the Agricultural Marketing Services (AMS) argument, which was inconsistent with rationale offered by AMS in the final rule, that the new final rule is to correct misleading speech and prevent consumer deception that purportedly occurred because of requirements AMS imposed in its 2009 version of the rule. read more

US - National Farmers Union (NFU), the US Cattlemen’s Association, Consumer Federation of America (CFA), and American Sheep Industry Association sent a letter to US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and US Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Froman last week (Friday, 27 September) urging USDA to reject an extension to the implementation of Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL).

IPCC report: Britain could cool if Gulf Stream slows

Telegraph: For the first time, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is due to give a clear prediction of how global warming will affect currents in the Atlantic Ocean. It will say that the circulation of warm and cold water in the Atlantic, which includes the Gulf Stream, will weaken by 20 to 44 per cent by the end of the century. Scientists claim that such a slow-down in the Gulf Stream will have a big impact on Britain, causing cooling of about 1.8F (1C) and disrupting weather patterns....
