Summary of the role The Data Flow Infrastructure group DFI within the Science Operations Software department SCS is responsible for developing and maintaining software components, which are critical for the endtoend operations of the ESO Observatories. The Data Flow Infrastructure software includes tools for proposal submission, observation preparation and execution, archive ingestion and retrieval, data organization and execution of data reduction pipelines. We are looking for a consultant to develop and maintain software applications and services supporting the operational and scientific requirements of the EELT and VLT dataflow. In addition to the core SW development, the assigned tasks require requirements analysis in periodic interaction with project scientists, test automation, software integration, deployment and enduser support. Reporting to the dataflow project manager and to the DFI group head, the consultant will be assigned to the further development of the Science Archive Facility, following an agile, featuredriven development process. He or she is also expected to contribute to other activities within the Dataflow project team, quickly adapting to the changing needs of our dynamic environment. Requirements The ideal consultant is a software engineer with a minimum of 3 years professional experience in software development. He or she will be able to support the full software development life cycle, from requirements gathering, design and implementation, to deployment and maintenance. Dataflow software developers are expected to write clear and concise developer and userlevel documentation. Team spirit, customer orientation and a strong sense for quality development are essential. Mandatory skills and experience Senior level expertise in Java software development. Very good knowledge of relational databases and objectrelational mapping technologies. Strong Linux experience. Proven experience developing dynamic web applications using HTML, CSS and Javascript. Solid practical familiarity with modern software engineering practices and tools, including configuration control tools, incremental iterative development, unit and integration testing and build systems like Ant or Maven. Short Term Planning Activities o Generating a full set of instrument timelines ITLs for all four 1week commanding periods that correspond to the agreed MTP o Working with the PI teams to update their commanding for each CP in turn o Using MAPPS to check that any commanding updates respect the operations constraints and remain within the envelope established in the MTP o Generating the payload operations requests and submitting them to the MOC 1 week before execution for each CP. Skills and Experience University education PhD or MSc in a scientific or technical subject and relevant professional experience. Experience in uplink science operations for solar system missions. Experience in payload modeling, simulation and commanding. Experience with simulation software for spacecraft operations and observation geometry.
