P&F Industries Inc., a Melville maker of air-powered tools and residential hardware, Wednesday posted a 12 percent increase in revenue for the third quarter, but a less than 1 percent increase in net income as selling, general and administrative expenses climbed. Revenue rose to $22.9 million from $20.5 million in the 2013 quarter, but net income inched up to $816,000 from $810,000.

The new plasma wakefield accelerator, constructed at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California, is just 12 inches long -- or about 90,000 times smaller than CERN's 17-mile-long Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp , Japan's biggest steelmaker, said on Thursday its first-half recurring profit rose 1.5 percent as lower material costs boosted margins and offset appraisal losses on its high-priced stockpiles. The world's No.2 steelmaker by output stuck to its full-year forecast of 400 billion yen in recurring profit, which is pre-tax before one-off items, compared with the 403.77 billion yen mean estimate of 16 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
