A storm system that has brought more than 5 inches of badly needed rain to parts of the Bay Area since Sunday is on its way out Tuesday, but another one is right behind it, a National Weather Service forecaster said. Since Sunday, 2.5 inches of rain has fallen in San Francisco, more than 5 inches have fallen in some areas of the Peninsula and 3 inches has fallen in Oakland.

A wet, heavy snow storm on the Sierra's eastern front snarled traffic around Lake Tahoe, closed schools in Reno and caused power outages for tens of thousands of northern Nevadans. NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Anderson says more than 36,000 customers remained without power by midmorning Tuesday, primarily in Reno and Sparks.
