Melting Cave Ice Is Taking Ancient Climate Data with It

2014-10-28 19:15:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Scientific American: On a recent visit to Crystal Ice Cave in Idaho, climate and cave researchers had to wade through frigid, knee-deep water to reach the ice formations that give the cave its name. Cavers are good-humored about the hardships of underground exploration, but this water was chilling for more than one reason: it was carrying away some of the very clues they had come to study. Ice is an invaluable source of information about the earth's past. Pollen trapped in ice from polar ice caps and mountaintop glaciers...

Humanity's 'inexorable' population growth is so rapid even global catastrophe wouldn't stop it

2014-10-27 20:46:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Independent: The global human population is locked in to an inexorable rise this century and will not be easily shifted, even by apocalyptic events such as a third world war or lethal pandemic, a study has found. EU emissions target isn't as ambitious as it seems

2014-10-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New Scientist: It sounds bold and ambitious. European Union leaders last night signed off on an agreement to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 40 per cent by 2030. But climate scientists are wary of applauding the plan. For one thing, the target is a cut of 40 per cent compared with greenhouse gas emissions in 1990 - nearly 25 years ago. Since then, the EU has made cuts of almost 20 per cent, mainly through burning less coal and outsourcing heavy industries to developing countries. So it is virtually halfway there...
