With mobile on its mind, SugarCRM looks to expand

SugarCRM has been busy, acquiring mobile app and data analytics company Stitch earlier this month and then this week, announcing with Deutsche Telekom a customer relationship management hosting service in Germany. The moves highlight the company's progress beyond its initial position as a niche, open-source alternative for CRM.

SugarCRM customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland-especially those concerned about privacy and data access issues-look to be the prime beneficiaries of a deal for Deutsche Telekom to host the company's customer relationship management service. The biggest advantage for prospective users is that Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems can host the CRM platform locally.

SugarCRM is hoping to gain inroads against its much larger rival Salesforce.com with a revamped user interface it says places emphasis on the needs of individual users, not business managers seeking a wide view of sales activity in their company. This "user-first" design approach includes a few pages from Salesforce.com's playbook, however, such as collaborative activity streams that seem close in purpose to Salesforce.com's Chatter, which was announced in November 2009.
