Future sea level rise from melting ice sheets may be substantially greater than IPCC estimates
2013-01-06 21:46:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: Future sea level rise due to the melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets could be substantially larger than estimated in Climate Change 2007, the Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC, according to new research from the University of Bristol. The study, published January 6 in Nature Climate Change, is the first of its kind on ice sheet melting to use structured expert elicitation (EE) together with an approach which mathematically pools experts' opinions. Has the Kyoto protocol done more harm than good?

New Scientist: Fifteen years after its painful birth in Kyoto, Japan, the world's first legally binding agreement to limit emissions of greenhouse gases ended this week. Mongabay: Scientists currently detect fires around the world using moderate resolution satellite imagery, however a new study in the Journal of Geophysical Research finds that this tool misses many of the world's smaller fires, which add up. "Accounting for small fires increased total burned area by approximately by 35 percent, from 345 million hectares/year to 464 million hectares/year," the scientists write. They employed satellite thermal imaging to catch fires and burn scars that normal satellite images...

Two months in: Windows 8 PC and tablet sales remain weak, slower adoption than Vista
2013-01-02 14:16:28| Extremetech
It has now been two months since the release of Windows 8, and, much to the chagrin of Microsoft, adoption of the new OS remains weak. Retailers and Microsoft's hardware partners are continuing to report slow sales of Windows 8 PCs. One report shows workplace adoption of Windows 8 to be almost nonexistent, compared to Windows 7's rapid uptake. There is even growing evidence that Windows Vista enjoyed faster growth than Windows 8.
