DEQ Reports Violations at Sussex County Landfill

Media outlets report that Virginia Department of Environmental Quality officials observed the violations during a Dec. 3 inspection. The agency issued the notices on Dec. 21. The violations included leachate flowing outside the lined disposal area into forested wetlands, and several sinkholes on top of the landfill.

DEQ spokesman also resigns over Flint water crisis, says city 'didn't feel like we cared'

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality spokesperson Brad Wurfel has joined director Dan Wyant in resigning after a task force cited department failures in addressing the Flint water crisis. Wurfel in an email to contacts on Tuesday night said he had been honored to serve under Wyant and was joining his boss in resigning.

North Carolina DENR is Now DEQ; New Audit Privilege and Limited Immunity Enacted

The Regulatory Reform Act of 2015 , passed by the North Carolina General Assembly in September and signed by Governor McCrory on October 22, made a number of significant changes to the state's environmental laws. Among other things, it changed the name of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.

Town asks for protection from DEQ regarding pipeline construction

The Town of Rocky Mount is the latest locality to seek protections from DEQ concerning the proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline. Monday night, town council agreed to seek a ruling from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to require site specific erosion and sediment control plans for any pipeline construction in Virginia.
