Fransen to retire next month as state DEQ chief

Curt Fransen, director of the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality since February 2012, will retire on May 22, Gov. Butch Otter announced today; Otter said he's in the process of finding a successor. "While perhaps there is no good time for a director to retire, DEQ's structure, staff and performance are sound and DEQ is prepared to address the significant challenges it faces in the coming years," Fransen wrote in a letter informing Otter of his retirement plans.

DEQ: Nearly 30 percent of water produced in Muskegon Heights a unaccounteda

A report from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality obtained by FOX 17 through the Freedom of Information Act shows approximately 29 percent of water produced by the Muskegon Heights filtration plant is 'unaccounted' for in the city's system. In the past several months FOX 17 has been investigating claims made by several dozen residents living in Muskegon Heights who say they've received unusually high water bills from the city, with some bills in the thousands of dollars.

DEQ eases up on Noranda tests

Noranda Alumina won't have to undertake immediate modeling to show how far mercury is spreading into the air from its the aluminum ore processing plant in St. James Parish, state regulators said. Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality officials had ordered that modeling in late February after company officials acknowledged last year that mercury air emissions had been occurring, possibly for years , without a permit.
DEQ awards contract to close Harrelson Landfill

Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Peggy Hatch announced Thursday that DEQ has awarded a contract to close the Harrelson Landfill on Russell Road in Shreveport to Murphy Brothers Trucking and Construction, LLC of Acadia, Louisiana. The landfill will be closed by placing a two foot thick layer of clay and six-inch layer of topsoil over the entire disposal area.
