Its taken five years but changes to patent legislation have finally passed into law. The Patents Bill passed its third reading yesterday, 117 to four, with only the Maori Party and Mana dissenting. The Bill had been introduced by Labour in 2008.

EcoWatch: The El Cerrito, CA, city council voted last night to ban single-use plastic shopping bags and Styrofoam. The plastic bag ordinance applies to all stores except restaurants and certain charities, while the Styrofoam law affects restaurants and city vendors. Both bans take effect on Jan. 1, 2014.
