Report: Gulf and Atlantic Coasts Not Prepared for Sea-Level Rise

National Geographic: The U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts are not ready for the increased flooding and stronger storms that are expected from climate change, scientists say. The National Research Council report, released today, warns that the past few years have seen "a dramatic rise in coastal-storm-related losses" along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, thanks to an increase in population and a rise in the number of homes and other structures built in at-risk areas. "There's a huge sense of urgency here," says Greg...

Warmer seas could see increase in exotic fish along British coasts

Blue and Green: Warmer sea temperatures could cause more exotic fish such as sunfish and bluefin tuna to migrate to the south west of England a scientist has said. In an interview with the BBC, Dr Tim Smyth of Plymouth Marine Laboratory, explained how the Cornish coast could see increases in numbers of exotic fish as they migrate to English waters due to warmer sea temperatures. Devon and Cornwall have recorded sea temperatures of 2C more than usual and locals have already seen species such as bluefin tuna....

Sea-level rise is already eating our coasts

Grist: We are a coastal country, says Susanne C. Moser, a convening lead author for the National Climate Assessments Coasts chapter. The U.S. has 94,000 miles of coastline and more than $1 trillion in coastal infrastructure. Coastal lifelines, such as water and energy infrastructure, and nationally important assets, such as ports, tourism, and fishing sites, all are increasingly vulnerable to sea-level rise, storm surge, erosion, flooding, and related hazards.
Should we try to fight rising sea levels - or abandon the coasts?

Vox: The world's sea levels are expected to rise 1 to 3 feet -- or more -- as the planet heats up in the coming century. The more greenhouse gases we emit, the bigger the rise, but we've already locked in at least some sea-level increase no matter what. So what should the millions of people living in low-lying coastal areas do? Broadly speaking, there are three ways to deal with sea-level rise. First, large coastal cities like New York or Boston or Tokyo will likely spend billions to erect dikes...
