The Toronto stock market looked set for a fourth day of gains Wednesday, with commodity prices rising and traders awaiting the mid-afternoon release of the minutes from the most recent interest rate meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve. U.S. futures signalled a weak start to the session with the Dow Jones industrial futures up five points to 17,657, the Nasdaq futures rose 3.8 points to 4,241.8 and the S&P 500 futures added 0.1 of a point to 2,048.7. Investors will be looking to the contents of the minutes to for hints about when the Fed might start hiking rates from near zero, where they have been since the 2008 financial crisis.

Oil and gas stocks led the way to a lower session on the Toronto stock market amid rising oil prices and an earnings report from energy sector heavyweight Encana that fell short of expectations. Trading is expected to be more active as banks, businesses and Treasury markets were closed Tuesday for Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the U.S. New York indexes also declined with the Dow Jones industrials down 69 points to 17,545.9, the Nasdaq gave back 12.3 points to 4,648.26 and the S&P 500 index fell 6.56 points to 2,033.12.

The Toronto stock market charged ahead more than 150 points Wednesday as oil prices stabilized following a series of jolts and traders digested positive earnings reports. The S&P/TSX composite index gained 152.75 points to 14,543.18 while traders also considered the ramifications of the Republicans regaining control of the U.S. Congress for the first time in eight years.
