Helping scientific supercomputing take advantage of emerging big-data technologies, high-performance computing manufacturer Cray is releasing a set of packages promising to optimize the process of running Hadoop on the company's XC30 machines. The Cray Framework for Hadoop, along with the Cray Performance Pack for Hadoop, provides a set of tools and best practices for configuring and optimizing an XC30 to run Hadoop for scientific big-data-style projects, according to the company.

IDC: Hadoop commonly used with other big data analytics systems

A study by analyst IDC shows how companies are using the open source Hadoop big data analytics systems alongside other systems to get value out of their data.IDC's "Trends in Enterprise Hadoop Deployments" report, commissioned by Red Hat, found that 32 percent of companies questioned had deployed Hadoop. An additional 31 percent said they had plans to deploy Hadoop within 12 months, and 36 percent said their Hadoop deployment schedule could go beyond 12 months.

Taking note of how customers have been working with its Hadoop distribution, Cloudera has expanded the scope of its software so that it can serve as a hub for all of an organization's data, not just data undergoing Hadoop MapReduce analysis. Some of Cloudera's enterprise customers have "started to use our platform in a new way, as the center of their data centers," said Mike Olson, Cloudera's chairman and chief strategy officer.
