Summary An experienced and knowledgeable Materials Engineer is required to support ESA onsite at ESTEC. Objective To support project reviews for materials process approval including safety reviews for use on launchers and spacecraft. Responsibilities Duties Specific tasks will include but will not be limited to Evaluation of nonmetallic materials such as polymers incl. adhesives and coatings, ceramics and composite materials for use on launchers as well as spacecraft Performing general failure analysis of materials and assemblies including resolution of internalexternal NCRs Non Conformance Reports of testing and evaluation activities Using various laboratory tools such as optical and electron, microscopy, spectroscopy, surface analysis instruments to analyse materials and processes behaviour Carrying out testing analysis of relevant lab investigations in an ISO 17025 compliant manner including procedure and documentation development Surface modification and analysis due to space environmental effects like atomic oxygen UVVUV and plasma effects. Analyse the behaviour of materials and their resistance to the space environment. Performing space environmental simulation to assess effects on materials Providing expert support for materials and process reviews as requested by formal reviews of space missions Carry out Materials and Processes reviews, Materials and Processes Control Boards MPCBs and participate as PA support in ESA Programme reviews Carry out Materials and Processes reviews, Materials and Processes Control Boards MPCBs and participate as PA support in ESA Programme reviews. Producing clear and professional reports as specified for the task Supporting the inclusion of results in internal databases Interaction with internal and external customers on a professional level Qualifications Experience PhD or MSc in a relevant field Familiarity with ESA PA requirements to review and accept RFDs, RFAs etc related to materials processes issues Familiarity with effects of the ground and space environment on materials performance incl. contamination cleanliness aspects is an asset. At least 4 years of relevant industrial experience preferably within the space domain Qualities The engineer must be willing operate in a team environment. A vacancy for an AIT Assembly Process Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence Space in Portsmouth The successful applicant will be responsible for providing the Mechanical Engineering inputs, based on robust processes and procedures, for the production of Satellite Communications Modules and Scientific payloads. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Project Preparation Phase Support to the customisation phase starting at the project kick off. Attend project DMU sessions to ensure design for manufacture specific to process. Create the documentation required for the production phases, including eWIS inputs, work instructions, and procedures. Review and approve all DTs and As Runs specific to process before execution. Provide feedback to author and ensure all parts are available. Ensure that specific product requirements, taken from the Packing, Handling and Transport Specification, are captured and included in work instructions and procedures. Technical Input to project to ensure that new process and test methods do not compromise AIT activities and production times. Design for Manufacture Assembly Design for Test. Prepare inputs to ARR to support Lead Engineer. Project Operational Phase Technical liaison with all concerned stakeholders, i.e. lead investigations, OR resolution and operational support. Support quality reviews and Root Cause Analysis Produce rework instructions based on project requirements and identify parts and tooling required to carry them out. Non Project Design of tooling build aids for assembly execution Support to RD Training module creation and maintenance. Responsible for ensuring that our working modes and processes are standardised, optimised, and current. Produce new processes, undertake process improvement and maintenance and monitor process implementation in operations. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Essential Background in manufacturing and or complex assembly preferably in a space aerospace environment. High level of mechanical skills and relevant experience. Experience of working in a high technology complex quality engineering environment with quality, procedures and process control. Educated to a minimum of HNC level in a Mechanical discipline. A lesser qualification is acceptable if a high level of similar industry experience can be demonstrated. Able to work offsite UK and abroad for undefined periods at short notice. Work overtime and occasional shifts. Able to support out of normal hours work using the on call rota process. Practical and proactive. Quality driven approach with high attention to detail. Experience in writing engineering documents. High selfmotivation and ability to deal with changing priorities on a multi project basis. Good problem solving skills technical, logistics and organisational.
